April 2019 Events in Hemming Park

Friends of Hemming Park hosts its Inaugural SpringFest; Jax Poetry Fest presents Performances and Hands-on Poetry Activities all month long

JACKSONVILLE, Fla., March 29, 2019 – Friends of Hemming Park is proud to host the following programs and events in Hemming Park, located at 135 W. Monroe Street in the heart of Downtown Jacksonville. All activities listed below are free and open to the public unless otherwise noted.

SPECIAL EVENTS

WED, APRIL 3

ArtWalk – Jax Poetry Fest Open Mic,  5 – 9 p.m.

Jax Poetry Fest kicks off a full month of events during ArtWalk in Hemming Park on Wednesday, April 3rd. DJ Geexella spins at 5; Melissa Ross hosts the High School Poetry Awards at 6: featured poets including Ebony Payne English perform, followed by a poetry open mic until 9 pm! Stop by the Friends of Hemming Park bar for adult beverages and enjoy hands-on poetry activities with Hope at Hand.

ArtWalk is presented by Downtown Vision on the first Wednesday of every month, rain or shine. More than 60 ArtWalk venues stretch across Downtown Jacksonville’s core and include galleries, museums, Downtown businesses and more. Hemming Park serves as ArtWalk headquarters and hosts a variety of artists and live performances each and every month.

SAT,  APRIL 13

Hemming Park Springfest  10 a.m. – 3 p.m.

Swing into Spring with Friends of Hemming Park! Enjoy FREE activities for all ages including swing dance lessons; aerial arts with SaltAer – Jax Beach Circus Arts; a plant sale and gardening demonstrations. Performers include the Ortega Elementary Steel Drum Band and Nan Nkama Pan-African Drum and Dance Ensemble. UF / IFAS Extension Duval County Agriculture, Jacksonville Zoo and Gardens, Bee Friends Farm and Jacksonville Public Library will provide a variety of activities.  We’ll host kids’ crafts and animal encounters (including a visit from our own better-than-l’il-Sebastian miniature horse, Buc!) in our pop-up Fairy Garden. The Magician of Hemming will be on hand along with food trucks, vendors, and more. Visit our partner MOCA, which hosts its MOCA Family Day on the same day.

TUESDAYS IN APRIL                                                                                                                 Poetry Readings and Activities with Hope at Hand – 11:30 am to 1:30 pm

Hope at Hand and Friends of Hemming Park present hands-on poetry activities and “celebrity” poetry readings every Tuesday in April.  Enjoy lunch in Charlie’s Cafe and performances from our new pavilion. Students from Douglas Anderson School of the Arts will present a very special performance on April 18th.

Jax Poetry Fest: Party in the Park with Al Letson  5 p.m. – 9:30 p.m.

Join Friends of Hemming Park, The Performer’s Academy and Hope at Hand for an evening of spoken word, music, food and fun during Jax Poetry Fest. Emmy and Peabody honoree Al Letson will host and perform along with award-winning poets including Ebony Payne English, Matthew “Cuban” Hernandez, Kia Flow and more. DJ Monsta spins all night. FRIDAYS IN APRIL

TGIF Music Series, 11:30 a.m.  – 2 p.m.

Hemming Park is a great place to enjoy lunch throughout the work week, with food trucks and music every day. On Fridays, we feature performances by some of Jacksonville’s favorite local bands. Bring a bag lunch, grab a bite from one of our food trucks or your favorite downtown restaurant and enjoy a free concert to get your weekend started. Here’s the full lineup for April:

Monday, Wednesday and Friday: Live Music, 11:30 a.m. – 2 p.m.

Monday – Thursday: Food Trucks in Charlie’s Cafe:  11 a.m. – 2 p.m

Friday:  Food Trucks on the Hemming Park Promenade:  11 a.m. – 2 p.m.

Monday – Sunday: Hemming Park Kids Zone, 11 a.m. – 5 p.m.

Tuesday Farmers Market with Berry Good Farms

We have partnered with Berry Good Farms, a division of North Florida School of Special Education. Berry Good Farms brings their mobile market, featuring fresh produce grown by students, to Downtown Jax on the 1st, 3rd & 5th Tuesday of every month from 10:30 a.m. to 1 p.m.

Hemming Park Walking Club

Join us every Tuesday in April at 11:30 a.m. for a guided walk in downtown Jax, led by Friends of Hemming Park staff. We meet near the “Opposing Forces” sculpture at the corner of Monroe and Laura Streets. Our route changes daily, and we visit a variety of Jacksonville landmarks during this fun, free, weekly event. Sunday Yoga in the Park

Spring yoga in Hemming Park meets at 3 pm on Sundays.  This is a donation based class, underwritten by Friends of Hemming Park.  Suggested donation is $5; become a member of Friends of Hemming Park and every class is FREE! Bring a mat and meet us in the Hemming Park kids zone (near the corner of Laura and Duval streets) for a sixty minute, all-levels class taught by Erin Leigh Mahoney.  We’ll move to the library Makerspace if weather is bad.
