On Thursday, June 2 – just days after the 2016 Jacksonville Jazz Festival and First Wednesday Art Walk – thousands of people were back in Hemming Park for a free community concert celebrating the life and music of Prince Rogers Nelson, the unparalleled musician and cultural icon, who passed away unexpectedly on April 21, 2016.
Only a few months before thousands had gathered in the same spot at Hemming Park to mourn the death of David Bowie at a free concert organized by local designer and musician Grant Nielsen. When asked if he would organize a similar show to honor Prince, Nielsen declined, but offered to help fellow musician and bonafide Prince fan Cyrus Quaranta get the project up and running.
The amazing show that took place just weeks after this initial meeting was made possible only because of the friends, partners and staff of Friends of Hemming Park. Our nonprofit organization is uniquely positioned to do exactly this – bring the Jacksonville community together in the heart of Downtown by activating our city’s oldest public park with new and exciting events, programs and amenities created through community-driven partnerships.
We want to sincerely thank our friends and partners below who donated their valuable time and talent to make sure the Hemming Park Prince Tribute Concert happened quickly, expertly and as a free event for the public.
